Labeled as the most phenomenal power couple of our time, I’m pretty sure most Filipinos (and even people from around the world) have heard of the word ‘AlDub’ aka the ship name of Alden Richards, an actor and TV host from GMA, a Philippine television network, and Maine Mendoza, the Dubsmash Queen of the Philippines who is famous for her role as “Yaya Dub” on the hit Philippine Variety show Eat Bulaga.
Last July, Eat Bulaga wanted to add something creative to the show so they added a segment called “Kalyeserye”, a live skit that happens on the road (kalye) in a certain community where the show will give prizes to the people who live there. The segment features three hosts from Eat Bulaga, namely, Wally Bayola, Jose Manalo and Paolo Ballesteros as Lola Nidora, Lola Tinidora, and Lola Tidora respectively. They are the three grandmothers of Yaya Dub (Mendoza) whose character on the segment is known to be snobbish and fiesty. However, one day, the producers of the show made Alden , who happened to be Maine’s real life celebrity crush, watch the segment. As his face appeared on the monitor, Yaya accidentally went out of character and smiled at the actor. That was the day when the AlDub phenomenon was born, and the rest is history.
Ever since then, it was established that Alden and Yaya liked each other, but due to Lola Nidora’s strict rules that want the two to observe the traditional way of Filipino courtship, she has not allowed Alden and Yaya to see each other face to face. Therefore, the two communicate via split screen. With this, they dubsmash to each other and write on a piece of paper to express their admiration for one another. According to Lola Nidora, there would be a right time or “tamang panahon” for them to take their friendship to the next level.
Luckily for AlDub Fans, Alden and Yaya Dub’s “tamang panahon” happened on October 24, 2015 at the Philippine Arena where more than 50, 000 people attended. This event caused the hashtag #AlDubEBTamangPanahon to gain 41 million tweets, the highest ever recorded number of tweets that Twitter has ever had.
Now, AlDub is still rising towards their popularity as they maintain on getting the top spot on Twitter Trends, and plenty of AlDub commercials can be seen on television, print advertisements and billboards. The fans, labeled as AlDub Nation, are now keeping watch on the developing onscreen romance between Alden and Yaya, and are even hoping for a real life relationship to happen.
Most people would actually be wondering why AlDub is such a phenomenon. It just revolves around two people falling in love on a television show. Most bashers would say that the segment is shallow, and is just like any regular comedy. However, behind all the laughter and the giddy romance, AlDub imparts valuable life lessons to its audience. Kalyeserye teaches us that there is a right time to everything, and that love is something to be taken seriously, and involves wise decisions. The show also influences the values of being respectful and obedient to elders, love for family and prayerfulness. Most of all, they never forget to help others, and the tickets that were actually sold during the “Tamang Panahon” event were all donated for the construction of libraries in the different parts of the Philippines.
Looking back on the events that occured, if it wasn’t for the creativity of the producers, or Maine Mendoza’s accidental reaction, the AlDub phenomenon wouldn’t have happened. So maybe AlDub is God’s plan of reminding us to use innovation and modernization for the common good, especially with all the crimes and violence happening right now. A show that incorporates the use of modern technology in order to spread moral values to the people around them, Kalyeserye will go a long way, and AlDub is indeed a phenomenon, not only because of the extraordinary entertainment that it brings, but also the power that it has to influence others to live out good values.
